The Science Behind Orthopedic Shoes. Are They Worth It?

The Science Behind Orthopedic Shoes. Are They Worth It?

What are orthopedic shoes?

Orthopedic shoes have several potential criteria that can provide greater benefit to feet with specific needs.

Here is a list of potential components of an orthopedic shoe.

  1. High level of adjustability. Shoes that are adjustable via laces, buckles, straps or elastic have a greater chance of fitting a uniquely shaped foot or a foot that may be swollen.
  2. High level of support and stability. A foot with certain biomechanical demands or a foot that is in pain may benefit from extra support and stability. Orthopedic shoes typically have firmer souls and firmer heel counters. Both of these areas contribute to increased support instability.
  3. Extra cushion and shock absorption. This may help reduce pain in the feet, ankles, and lower extremity.
  4. Breathable materials with smooth, non-irritating linings.
  5. Ergonomic design
  6. Insoles that may be removed for modification or to be replaced with a custom insert or orthotic.
  7. Multiple widths available. The width of an orthopedic shoe can range anywhere from a 4A to a 16 E.
  8. Extra depth or added depth. Some orthopedic shoes come with added or extra depth. This is extra room from top to bottom, which can help accommodate a high in step foot or other structural deformities such as hammer toes.

Common foot problems addressed by orthopedic shoes.

Foot pain that is not resolved by traditional treatment or feet that have unique shapes may benefit from an orthopedic shoe. Some of these conditions would be-

  1. Bunions
  2. Flat feet
  3. Plantar fasciitis
  4. Hammertoes
  5. Charcot foot deformity
  6. High arches or pes cavus
  7. Diabetes
  8. Edema

Misconceptions about orthopedic shoes

  1. They are only for the elderly. Orthopedic shoes have come a long way. There are many new and upcoming shoe manufacturers that are combining both function and fashion making the style acceptable for any age.
  2. Orthopedic shoes are too expensive. Some orthopedic shoes are very expensive, however, there are many nowadays that are in the same price range as a traditional fashion shoe at your local shoe store.
  3. Orthopedic shoes are uncomfortable. This is not true. Due to the adjustability breathable materials and extra support orthopedic shoes tend to be more comfortable than a traditional fashion shoe.

If you’re not sure if orthopedic shoes are worth the investment, remember that keeping our bodies moving is the key to health and longevity.

Remember, you could own the fanciest car made but without tires, you won’t be able to pull it out of the garage.
