Who doesn't want more attractive toes and beautiful toenails? Pitted nails, ingrown nails and discolored, infected nails can be an embarrassment when wearing sandals, flip-flops and open-toe shoes. But beyond the embarrassment they may cause, these toenail conditions often serve as barometers of our health. In addition, they may cause pain and discomfort that's difficult to ignore. If you're suffering from any of these toenail conditions, have your feet evaluated by a podiatrist who can diagnose the ailment and then provide appropriate treatment or prescribe medication.
If you suspect an infection (always consult a physician), wear shoes that fit well and are made of materials that breathe. Clean and dry feet resist disease, so shoes, socks and hosiery should be changed more than once daily. Clip toenails straight across, and disinfect instruments used to cut nails, including home pedicure tools.
